FOALED FEBRUARY 18, 2013
CAPE CANAVERAL - AUBERGINE, BY RINGSIDE )
Lifetime starts: 33

"Moose" is the cuddliest, most in your pocket type guy! A gentle giant, Moose retired in 2022 after 33 lifetime starts. He is currently enjoying time off, living out in pasture with other retired racehorses, working on groundwork, and beginning walk/trot under saddle. He will be looking for a forever home and partner who will be his best friend, take him on trail rides and enjoy dressage or flatwork and that casual family farm life type living. While he does not have any known limitations, he will not be headed to a competitive home after 7 years as a professional racehorse Moose is ready for a more relaxed second career. Moose is a weaver so he's got his eye on a home where he'll live out 24/7 with a friend or two (he has stopped weaving entirely over the last 6-8 weeks). Like other stereotypic behaviors, weaving is not "curable" once established and can only be improved by providing adequate and consistent turnout, a herd dynamic (even one horse friend makes for a tiny but mighty herd!), and freedom to express and play and roam with constant forage (grazing and/or slow feed hay nets). Don't let this vice fool you though, Moose has A LOT to offer his perfect person. He is smart as a whip, well put together, and has shown a keen interest and curiosity for working with his human(s). He is first to the gate, polite as can be, and has beautiful rhythmic gaits. This big boy has much to give that right person! Moose is W/T/C under saddle and has been called a "cadillac ride" by one of our volunteers because his gaits are so smooth/easy to ride! HORSE LEVELS *For more information on Horse Levels click HERE*

  • Leading and Ground Manners - Level 2 -  Moose is led easily on a loose lead, but can sometimes get distracted and may require some redirecting by his handler.

  • Grooming and Tacking - Level 2  - Moose loves attention and getting groomed!

  • Horse Care - Level 2  - Moose goes barefoot/is comfortable barefoot during the winter, and may require basic front shoes outside of that (currently still barefoot, however, and doing great!). He is a harder keeper but is maintaining his weight well on our feeding program.

  • Riding - Level 2 -  Moose is a gentleman under saddle and has an incredibly smooth W/T/C in the arena. He has been ridden by multiple volunteers of varying experience levels and never sets a foot wrong in the arena. He is sensitive and can be nervous outside the arena and has not yet been taken on trails but we see no issue with him building his confidence slowly over time.

  • General Demeanor - Level 2 - Moose is a "steady eddie" in his familiar environment, but can need an experienced handler to help show him the way in new environments.

  • Physical Capability - Level 2 - Moose is best suited to dressage/flat work/pleasure/trail home. While he doesn't have any acute injuries, Moose worked as a professional athlete for 7 years and would not be suitable for jumping/cross country/etc. as this would be outside of his best/full life/future and would likely have him coming up body sore.
